Vitreographs are much like monotypes in the fact that one is printing from a flat surface and offsetting the information to a second flat surface.

GLASS------------> PAPER

Because glass is such a smooth and chemically unaltered surface, the inks which release from the surface of the glass are pure and rich. Whites are clean and reds are not muddy.

The glass does go under the same amount of pressure as a piece of Plexiglas does, however the tempered glass does need to be surrounded by a wood frame that is the same height to disperse the pressure evenly. 45,000 pressure per square inch is a heavy bird on the glass.

Hi Kim,
What is the history of this technique? Can you give more specifics?

Vitreography began in the mid 1970's by a glass artist named Harvey K. Littleton. Glass plates 3/8" thick, commonly used for windows or shelving, are run through an etching press. (The glass can be etched, sandblasted, or printed planographically.)

This print in particular has around 12-15 layers of color, pattern, ect. Treat the surface like a monotype; the ink releases much nicer too. The paper used is regular BFK white. (22"x 30")

The glass plate does need to be encased/surrounded by a wood/plastic frame when printing. This offsets some of the pressure from the press that would normally shatter the glass.
The edges do need to be cold worked (filed). They are normally sharp- I can attest to this.

Hi Kim,

I am trying to create a transparent layer in a multilayered print. I was wondering how to get an image on glass. I have thought of a layer of transparency film but cannot get a size the size of the glass... 15 x 19..i wonder if that static window product will work. Any suggestions?
